José M. Álvarez Losada

As a versatile violinist, he regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician or concertmaster and has a wide repertoire, which includes works from the Baroque period to the present day, with special dedication to the music of Spanish composers.


After being awarded in various competitions, such as the international "Joaquín Rodrigo" (Madrid, 2004) or the "Primer Palau" (Barcelona, ​​2006), he started an intensively performing in auditoriums in Europe, America and Asia.


As a soloist he performed with various orchestras, such as the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, the “Real Filharmonía de Galicia” Orchestra, the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, the Mallorca Chamber Orchestra or the Acadèmia 1830 Orchestra. In addition, he gives the premiere of the revised version of “Poemario for violin and string orchestra”, by Antón García Abril, with close collaboration with the composer. Passionate of the solo violin repertoire, he usually performs recitals where he confronts the classical repertoire for this instrument with works by contemporary composers, with the intention of spreading the music of our time.


Chamber music was central to Losada since the beginning of his career. He was a founding member of the “Música en Compostela” String Quartet, specialized in Spanish music performing, together with Agustín León Ara (violin), Enrique Santiago (viola) and Pedro Corostola (cello). This quartet, which Marçal Cervera would later join as a cellist, led the premieres of several contemporary composers, as well as an important work of recovery and dissemination of the Spanish musical heritage.


As a great enthusiast for violin and piano music, Losada regularly performs recitals where he explores the huge repertoire that exists for this genre. Some of his last projects included the performance of the complete cycle of the 10 sonatas for violin and piano by Beethoven or the recovery of the violin work of the Galician violinist and composer Manuel Quiroga. Currently he also has a stable duo with guitarist Pedro Mateo, with whom he has made the first worldwide recording of the sonatas for violin and guitar by the Austrian composer Ferdinand Rebay, with the “Eudora Records” label. This album has received praiseworthy critiques in diverse specialized magazines and recognitions like the "opus d'or" of the Opushd magazine.


Although his artistic activity is currently focused on performances as a soloist and chamber musician, he also has extensive orchestral experience. After his time at the National Youth Orchestra of Spain and the "Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester" he was a member of the “Joaquín Rodrigo” Chamber Orchestra and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, as well as a collaborator of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra. More recently he performed the role of guest concertmaster in various ensembles, such as the “Real Filharmonía de Galicia” Orchestra, the Menorca Chamber Orchestra, the "Ciutat d'Eivissa" Symphony Orchestra or the Formentor Chamber Orchestra.


Born in Ourense (Spain), he received a complete education through his main teachers: Gayané Pogossova, disciple of the legendary teacher of the Russian School Yuri Yankelevich; Agustín León Ara, professor at the Brussels Conservatory and the Queen Elizabeth Musical Chapel of Belgium; and Maighread McCrann, professor at Graz University and concertmaster of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. It should be noted the great influence of his training stage in the Austrian capital when he performs the music of the Classical period, for which he feels special preference.


As a result of his extensive academic and concert experience, his passion for pedagogy was born, which led him to teach courses and master classes in numerous conservatories in Spain an abroad, as well as in various centers and institutions, such as the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), the "Música en Compostela" International University Course (specialized in Spanish music), the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) and the Universities of Leipzig, Louisiana, Münster, Ostrava, Pristina or Tirana. 


He currently combines his concert activity with his position as Professor of Violin at the Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands.
